Process of applying for a Research Grant from Bowel Cancer West

In order to apply to Bowel Cancer West for project research or educational funding the Directors will require key information in writing to give full consideration to the request as outlined below:

Bowel Cancer West is a charitable organisation established with an aim to improve the outcomes and experience of Peninsula patients with bowel cancer by supporting education, training & research. Proposals which meet this aim will be considered for funding: this includes basic & applied science (laboratory-based), translational and clinical projects. These may be either primary or secondary research. Proposals from first time researchers are welcome. Equipment, personnel or specific tasks such as laboratory or statistical analysis may be funded. The grant is not exclusive of other sources of funding i.e. it may be used to support research already part funded from elsewhere. Proposals which are likely to deliver results within 1 year of commencement will be prioritised.
 
Assessment: proposals will be assessed against the following criteria:

  1. Potential Importance to Peninsula Bowel Cancer patients
  2. Clarity of hypotheses, aims and/or objectives
  3. Feasibility of work programme (assessed from research design and timeline )
  4. Relevant track-record of applicant (assessed from CV)
  5. For clinical projects have all NHS research costs been met?
  6. For non clinical projects – have all likely costs been accounted for?

Process of applying for Educational Training

Bowel Cancer West will require the following:

2.Background details of the individual/s and reason for attendance
3.Potential benefit of attendance for Bowel Cancer West
4.Cost
5.Timing

It is a requirement that all individuals financially supported by Bowel Cancer West must provide a précis of their educational knowledge gained from their training activities, and seek to identify areas of application opportunities for the benefit of Bowel Cancer West in a further educational training capacity.

2.BCW - GP South West Education Roadshow
The first local educational colorectal presentation forums with GP practices accross the region will be held on Thursday 8th March 2012 at The Elfordleigh Hotel. The Bowel Cancer West Directors will be presenting on referral issues, signs and symptoms with an open question and answer session.

3.Darke Darke Reseach Grant
Commissioned two seperate projects in February 2012
1.Do objectively measured demographic, intra-operative and oxygen delivery variables predict readiness for hospital discharge after major elective surgery? (£3,030 allocated)
2.'Distribution of socio-economic groups in colorectal cancer liver metastases patients undergoing resection' examines whether people who are affluent have better results after surgery than patients who come from less priviledged backgrounds. (£1,725 allocated)

4.Bowel Cancer Public Awareness Event
It is proposed that this will be held in the Derriford Hospital concourse in May 2012, further details to follow
